Index of American Design.

The Index is made up of 18,257 watercolor works by some 1,000 artists. A Federal Art Project dating to the Great Depression, it sought to identify and preserve a national, ancestral aesthetic for the United States. The watercolors depict American folk and decorative arts objects from the colonial period through 1900.

I want to reproduce video files on a TV. For the past several years, I relied on my TV’s built-in decoding facilities (LG‌ OLED 55B7V), in combination with minidlna and/or Jellyfin. That has served me well for a while. However, too many videos now come with DTS audio tracks, and I even had issues with video once or twice. I don’t want to transcode, for æsthetic reasons.

It is surprisingly difficult to play video from a computer. I tried to just use an N100 box I had, but that requires setting up the “monitor” (HDMI to AV receiver) connection correctly (with HDR, a 24.976 framerate for movies, and audio out), correct flags to mpv (for GPU decode, vo=dmabuf-wayland to avoid a rendering roundtrip, and for audio passthrough of as much as possible; I also had to disable the HDMI audio output in Pipewire to give mpv direct access). And it still didn’t look right.

Running Kodi atop a normal Linux system is also annoying, what with logins, setup steps, and everything.

I ended up getting a Ugoos AM6B+, with CoreELEC and JellyCon. I maybe would have preferred Jellyfin’s app interface, but it’s not really important. What’s important is that it works out of the box (for a certain meaning of “box”; you do have to install CoreELEC and JellyCon).

The AM6B+ is one of very few devices that work with Dolby Vision profile 7 FEL. That’s important to display UHD‌ Blu-ray remuxes; the “FEL” (full enhancement layer) encodes the extra brightness for HDR. The tradeoff is that this box does not support AV1 decoding at 4k; I haven’t yet run into files like that, so that’s probably fine.

I set up this “puttering Wednesday” feature to limit this sort of content, but it still seems to dominate on here. Too easy to write, and there’s always something.

Not doing much in the way of puttering lately. Updated my homebrew SSG with an image pipeline for a recent post with photos. The <img> tag is one of the trickiest parts of HTML.

Got a synth (Arturia MicroFreak) and a USB audio interface for all our instruments. Synths are fun.

Painful Signs starts anew: this is a series of posts on Homer’s Iliad. The authors posted on a corporate platform for a while, but now repost the material — newly edited — on their own site. You can use this to pace a re-read of the poem.

I spent much of the weekend putting up shelves. We have a small utility room next to the kitchen, where the washing machine lives. There are shelves there. This is a rental apartment, so I wasn’t the one to install those, and they aren’t optimally built: each shelf is individually screwed into the wall via two L-shaped braces, so the resulting levers pull screws out of the wall. The wall is covered in a thick layer of plaster, so the top layer (where the screws are) is porous. Proper shelving systems have full-height vertical mounting rails, which make better leverage.

The plastic dowels holding the top screw in each brace were pulling out of the wall. In fact, I think I’m not the first man to tackle the issue: the bottom screws held well, and the dowels there are gray; the top dowels were orange, and pulled out like carrots.

Given how this is a rental, I needed to replace all this as-is, but better. I distrust handymen, and kinda like doing these things (occasionally).

Porous walls are not great at holding dowels, especially if the previous one fell out. You can drill a bigger hole and put in a larger dowel, but that looked like a temporary solution at best.

What I did was: clean out the holes (with a vacuum); apply primer on the inside; wait a day; fill with acrylic-based glue marketed for concrete applications, and stick in new dowels; wait two days; hang the shelves back. Seems to hold, for now. Glue took two days to dry, so we had a messy space in the kitchen with all the things that are normally on the shelves.

An old-fashioned alternative is to stick in wooden dowels wrapped in a piece of (properly moistened) ‌plaster bandage. I’ll try that if my current attempt fails while we’re still here.

This week’s puttering is not computer-related! I’d like this to be a general DIY type of section.

I have a bike. It’s called “Bike’s SE”, and it’s a Chinese Brompton clone. I think it’s specifically branded for the Russian market, and it’s sold through shops here. It’s far from the best CN Brompton in terms of price–quality ratios, but I only understood that after riding it for half a season.

I had to replace v-brake pads almost immediately (some clones come with discs; I don’t know if those fit well on the 16” wheels and allow proper folding, but I like the idea of having brakes with actual stopping power). The derailleur looks like what you can find if you search for “Brompton 6-speed derailleur” on your favorite Chinese marketplace, and it’s mostly plastic. The finest British engineering is faithfully reproduced in the chain tensioner, so the chain is always dirty.

The shifter was a pain, has “Bike’s” written on it, and is not good at all. In its final weeks, shifting up always shifted all the way up, to the sixth gear.

This is the least-searchable cycling brand possible, so it’s difficult to find component compatibility information. As it turns out, the shifter pulls 3.2 mm of cable for each gear, which matches the Shimano Tourney 6-speed shifter (EF-41). This component spreadsheet is ✨amazing✨. I used calipers to measure the cable pull on the old shifter to the best of my ability. Luckily, it all works, and I can now shift any way I want.

I went from 104 to 98 kg over this cycling season, with no other sports and very limited diet change. And I love riding this thing.

Недавно как раз читал про эту фразу в „Гибели Запада” и других мемах Долинина. Все авторы этой цепочки хорошо понимали, что к Саади фраза отношение имела крайне опосредованное; и у Пушкина в Е.О. это уже была автоцитата.

Имел сегодня оказию вспомнить книгу Сергея Корытина Человек и медведь. По содержанию и предназначению это материал по ОБЖ; по форме — высокая литература. Можно почерпнуть массу наблюдений, которые обязательно пригодятся читателю в быту и на производстве.

Впервые я встретил эту замечательную книгу на полке в одной из аудиторий МЦНМО в 2001 году. С тех пор живу со знанием, что при попадании когтей медведя в человеческие глазницы вскрывается черепная коробка.

I’ve patched Miniflux to show entries in a different order.

RSS is convenient, but most readers have simple sorts — oldest first, newest first, and that’s it. What I wanted was a sort that does not flood my timeline with feeds that are updated often, and thus prevents me from missing posts in rarely-updated feeds, allows to work through backlogs of newly added feeds, &c.

So I took a hatchet to Miniflux, and now sort by “recency in feed”: first it shows the most recent post for each feed, then the second-most-recent for each feed, and so on. So a new post from Bartosz Ciechanowski will always be near the top, and there isn’t too much Metafilter in my life. I can fearlessly subscribe to high-traffic feeds now.

Not done neatly, the result isn’t always intuitive (sort order changes on feed updates; I update rarely), and likely does not work in some cases. So I’m not ready to publish. Maybe I’ll think on it, and decide how to integrate better.

Matklad’s approach is simpler, and similarly equalizes the treatment of high- and low-frequency feeds. I think it’s too simple. Note how the bottom of their blogroll page is a bunch of posts from 2022.

К мультфильму Пелевин ближе), и The Ballad of Beta-2 Дилэни (думал о ней недавно в связи с игрой Micropul и лагерем первобытных ремесел; изложу отдельно).

WATCH Saw Alatriste. I think I had it queued because ACOUP links to it as a faithful cinematic representation of pike formations? That bit (the Battle of Rocroi sequence at the end of the film) was indeed interesting to see. Otherwise — I don’t agree with the overall negative reviews for the movie (I think critics judged it by criteria to which it did not aspire), but also

As next stage in our quest to see the movies featuring in a “movie soundtrack highlights” concert we heard in August, we also watched a Bond movie. I chose Casino Royale, because it also has a parkour scene. Sadly, the soundtrack is less prominent than in some other entries of the franchise. I have nothing to say on the movie itself.

Новый мост, продляющий Мосфильмовскую к новым ЖК у метро Аминьевская, сильно упростил нашу жизнь. Вообще Москва (за ТТК) для пешехода и велосипедиста не столько город, сколько архипелаг: состоит из островов, разделенных «бессветофорными дорогами», железными дорогами, и реками. Мостов и переездов очень мало, а они очень нужны.

Tech note: OCaml seems nice so far. However, the regex facility that comes with it by default (Str) is just astonishingly bad. omg wtf i dont even level bad. This seems to be well-known in the community, yet tutorials and such still refer to it.

dune seems nice though.

Bought some speakers (Edifier R1280DB, used) and set up a music-playing laptop for my son. Not internet-connected, given the givens; wireless is turned off (by uninstalling NetworkManager). Also has Processing — we are working through the Generative Design book — and Kiwix with a bunch of Wikipedia ZIMs. Let’s see how it goes.

Also re-watching Star Wars with my son. We will, of course, also watch the rest of the series together. I don’t believe the movies are *good*, but they’ve become indispensable.

Trying to watch fewer TV series: went through my Sonarr, removed most of it. Still, this week had season finales of Dexter: Resurrection (there’s just something to Michael C. Hall’s performance in this role), and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (best Trek of the current era, though I think I’m losing appetite for most of it).

First full week of writing into this blooooog. It’s not yet public, though. I plan to set up an RSS feed and single-note pages over the weekend. Expect a rant.

Strudel is a JS music thing. It’s a port of Tidal Cycles from Haskell. There is this usual feeling of tension between the superiority of the Web as a platform, and the inferiority of the JS world at creating new things. Tidal Cycles is much more difficult to get into, and lacks the nice animations.

В книжке про ученых встречается, например, «молекула синильной кислоты, состоящая из одного атома азота, одного атома углерода и одного атома калия». Когда видишь такое — появляются и сомнения в качестве перевода прочего. Текст сложный. Другие переводы той же переводчицы на Флибусте — любовные романы.

А вот есть такой странный момент: в переводе встречается фраза «Эйнштейн написал элегию на смерть Шварцшильда и зачитал ее на похоронах ученого». Звучит даже как-то глупо — какая еще элегия, чай не Джей Ди Вэнс?

Речь Эйнштейна в немецком оригинале определяется как Gedächtnisrede — «речь, посвященная памяти». Не элегия, конечно. При этом по-английски то же самое называется eulogy — уже возможна путаница, и ошибка переводчика.

Я открыл английский перевод (Эдриан Натан Вест), и там «Einstein wrote a eulogy for him after his death, and read it aloud during his funeral». Кажется, все ясно — русский перевод на самом деле с английского (название, кстати, явно переведено с английского — по-испански книжка называется «Un verdor terrible»), и переводчица ошиблась. Но! в испанском оригинале Лабатута: «Tras su muerte, Einstein le dedicó una elegía, que leyó durante su funeral» — то есть снова элегия!

Получается, что ошибся Лабатут (видимо, читал про речь Эйнштейна в английской литературе), в английском переводе переводчик исправил эту нелепость, а в русском она была бережно сохранена.

Первая глава книги в переводе называется «Прусская синь» (Azul de Prusia, Prussian blue). По русски этот цвет чаще называют «берлинская лазурь»; я решил изучить, насколько распространено наименование «прусская синь». Первые результаты по запросу «прусская синь» в Яндексе — статьи с названием «берлинская лазурь» и списками синонимов, но отдельно «прусская синь» тоже встречается. На второй странице выдачи мне встретилась любопытная запись — художница Евгения Ермакова рассказывает о своей работе «Прусская синь, или последнее слово о нацизме», вдохновленной книгой Лабатута в русском переводе.

За последний год я глубоко погрузился в мир Minecraft. Ну то есть я администрирую сервер, на котором мой сын играет с одноклассниками.

Я познал разницу между Java Edition и Bedrock Edition; узнал, что такое лончер; встроил в свои конфиги nix-minecraft; поднял drasl, чтобы у всех пиратов были костюмчики, видные друг другу, а сервер можно было закрыть от лишних людей; написал инструкции по установке, а местами и сам установил людям китайский лончер HMCL, чтобы этими аккаунтами пользоваться; настроил Geyser, чтобы участники с Bedrock тоже могли поучаствовать. В общем, майнкрафт — это целый мир.

Вот чего я не знал: номера версий этого чуда техники ничего не значат. Клиенты 1.21.4 не совместимы с сервером 1.21.8; пропасть между ними так же велика, как между 1.10.1 и 1.17.2. Так что все клиенты надо обновлять, если обновил сервер, даже в третьем знаке после запятой.

Не будьте, как я. Настаивайте на Luanti. Несвободное ПО всегда найдет, как выпить вашей кровушки.

This is very considerate. With how iPhones work, I had, until recently, the misfortune of occasionally seeing the Web in a way that was not uBlock-mediated. How do people even manage to live like this? It is very kind to suggest uBlock Origin to people who are not aware of it.

I do not fully agree with the phrasing — for me, it’s about attention and sanity, rather than time and bandwidth. But that’s fine.

Имел сегодня повод вспомнить и воспроизвести свое мнение о словосочетании «по сути», и хочу здесь тоже записать.

В идеальном случае «по сути» должно вводить новый взгляд на проблему: смену смыслового поля, слом дискурса. Например, в песне «Колхозники» группы «Кровосток»:

По телеку завтра покажут, как милицией была уничтожена банда рецидивистов
А по сути — пацаны не успели ни вмазаться, ни раскуриться.

Тут все прекрасно: вторая половина предложения невозможна в рассказе по телевизору, первая — в сознании колхозников, по дискурсивным причинам.

И вот когда я слышу «по сути» — я жду такого; а оказывается, как правило, что говорящий чего-то не понял и пересказывает в тех же понятиях, но более убого.

Bartosz Ciechanowski is the master of this art form, of course.

The Decktet is the kind of tarot deck they use in the alternate universe where Charlemagne was a badger.

It’s is an alternative card deck you can print yourself. It has an interesting structure (most cards have 2 suits), and the design is pretty and quirky. The games (published on the Decktet Wiki) are mostly quick — which is a very important consideration — have no complex setup, and generally have a kinder, more modern vibe than traditional card games. I liked Jacynth and Mountebank; my son enjoys Magnate.

This is a story close to my heart. Apparently, the Android calculator app uses recursive real arithmetic for some of its operations (though not everywhere, to limit the impact of undecidability). Bizarrely, the illustration under “constructive real numbers” does not show constructive real numbers, but otherwise — a nice and surprising writeup.

I was not previously aware of her work, but here’s an interview with Barbara Probst in Aperture, and I can’t stop thinking of how essentially photographic her method is, and how much I like some of the illustrations in the interview.

To look simultaneously from different perspectives means to give up the single point of view to which we’re accustomed. It also means no longer believing that the narrative emanating from that single viewpoint is reliable or truthful.
